Federal authorities have arrested a Las Cruces man for threatening a mass shooting at New Mexico State University in May.

Zachary M. Hess, 19, was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center at 8:25 a.m. Monday, the same day officials unsealed documents in federal court detailing the allegations. He’s charged with making a threat online.

Using a website that sets up anonymous online chats, Hess wrote to another person: “You’re going to be one of the 4 people I’m going to be telling before I shoot up my college in 3 days,” later referring to NMSU, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court.

Hess was enrolled at NMSU from fall 2011 through last May, university spokeswoman Minerva Baumann said. He is no longer at the school.

The alleged threat occurred May 27, four days after the mass shooting near a college in Isla Vista, California, that left seven people dead. With that massacre in mind, the person on the other end of the chat replied, “Dude, that’s not funny.”[…]

In a subsequent interview, Hess admitted to writing the threat but said he never intended to shoot anybody. According to the criminal complaint, he reportedly thought he was chatting in a completely anonymous environment.
