Police say a one-year-old child has died after a double shooting in Louisville’s Shawnee neighborhood Wednesday evening.
Officers were called to 37th St. and W. Market St. just before 6 p.m. Police say a mother and her child were outside their home when they were hit by bullets.
“It looked like the baby had blood coming out of her neck real bad. You know, they was trying to do the best they could to try and save the child,” said neighbor Twyman Reed.
LMPD Spokesperson Dwight Mitchell says the child was rushed to Kosair Children’s Hospital, where she later died. Mitchell says the woman, who appears to be in her 20s, was transported to University Hospital and has non-life threatening injuries. Mitchell says the incident appears to have been a drive-by shooting.
“Obviously, this appears to have been some type of drive-by situation,” Mitchell told WDRB News. “It’s still too early to tell whether these individuals were the targets of the shooting.”
Sherrie Miller says the woman was her granddaughter and the child was her great granddaughter.
“It really doesn’t make any sense,” Miller told reporters on the scene. “We need more police officers, we need more police officers down here in this west end. They know this west end is bad.”
