Rev. Al Sharpton sees himself as having surpassed Jesse Jackson as the face of modern civil rights battles and he’s not afraid to say so.

“I think he’s (Jackson) now realized that he’s older now,” Sharpton says in a new Politico profile. “And he realizes that I’ve come into my own and he’s got to deal with it.”

The profile looks at how Sharpton, an MSNBC host, transformed himself from local race agitator to a top player in politics and close adviser to the Obama White House. It homes in on Sharpton’s role in Ferguson, MO, the city rocked by the police shooting of 18-year-old black man Michael Brown.
