Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver on Tuesday said he doesn’t think President Barack Obama needs to come to Ferguson, even if the town’s recent unrest reminds him more of Fallujah.
“I don’t think the president needs to come to Ferguson,” the Kansas City-area Democrat said on MSNBC. “It adds another distortion. We don’t need that now. We don’t need any more people coming into Ferguson to help the poor people out during this time of trouble. What we need is a sense of calm and anything other than that is going to be dangerous.”
The Democratic congressman also said the situation in Ferguson looks more like Iraq than the U.S. “Ferguson resembles Fallujah more than it does Ferguson,” he said, perhaps an allusion to growing criticism of the armored vehicles, SWAT cars, sniper rifles and other elements of police militarization seen in the area.
Cleaver said that the protests in Ferguson — a majority black city that has seen demonstrations increasingly turn violent in recent days — are largely because of the community’s sense that it “has been essentially left behind in terms of racial progress.”
