School officials have canceled a pageant and talent contest at McCracken Middle in Spartanburg after a letter spread on social media saying it shouldn’t happen.

Officials tell FOX Carolina that they became aware of the letter earlier in the week. In it, the letter reportedly said that the pageant could cause detriment to a student’s self-esteem and academic success.

Spartanburg School District 7 officials said the pageant had “the best of intentions,” but they ultimately decided to drop it because of the parents’ concerns.

“(It) hadn’t gotten far enough to be a problem,” a district official told FOX Carolina.
