Three members of the Congressional Black Caucus are urging the Justice Department to investigate the Ferguson Police Department to determine whether incidents similar to this weekend’s shooting have previously occurred.

“We urge the Department to examine both the facts of the specific incident as well as the potential pattern or practice of police misconduct by the Ferguson Police Department,” a letter signed by Representatives John Conyers (D-Mich.), Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) and Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) states.

Fudge is the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Clay represents Ferguson.

The three lawmakers go on to state their fear that the St. Louis County Police Department may not provide an accurate investigation.

“The St. Louis County Police Department may not be the most objective or credible body to investigate civil rights matters involving law enforcement given evidence of racial profiling by that Department in the recent past,” the letter says.
