Earnest dodged the question and instead replied that the United States “has been and will continue to be a beacon of freedom and respect for basic human rights around the globe,” and called it “a founding principle” of our country.

Henry pressed further and repeated his initial question “Is preventing genocide in America’s core interests?”

“Each of these situations is evaluated on a case-by-case basis,” Earnest answered.
