Half of Americans believe that the Central American children who have crossed the border illegally should be sent home because the U.S. doesn’t have the resources to deal with them, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll has found.

The poll found that 51% believed the migrants should be “returned immediately” while 43% said the U.S. has a responsibility to allow the children to stay if they are facing danger in their home countries.

That split opinion emerged in a survey conducted July 30-Aug. 3 as an influx of thousands of unaccompanied minors has strained U.S. border patrols and detention facilities.
