A man who allegedly tried to rob two convenience stores Tuesday night was shot and killed by a store clerk, police said.

Officers responded to the Ave. Mini Mart, at 750 Congress Ave., about 11:43 p.m., after the owner reported an attempted robbery, police said. The owner told police the man was armed with a rifle.

While police were investigating that report, the owner’s brother called him and said that a man had tried to rob the brothers’ second store on Washington Avenue. The brother, a 26-year-old New Haven resident, said that he shot the robber, police said.
