A South American side has won every World Cup in the Western Hemisphere, so it stands to reason Argentina has as good as shot as anyone to win it all, save the host nation Brazil and its six-fingered families. La Albiceleste has underwhelmed so far, however, held scoreless by Iran until a piece of individual brilliance in extra time by Lionel Messi killed the Iranian dream.

Iran’s neighbor is in the midst of sectarian crisis, with the worked-out ISIS fighters capturing control of major cities marching toward Baghdad. The Sunni group in Iraq took time out of its busy militant schedule to congratulate Messi on singlehandedly defeating their enemy. From Brookings:

Mehr News Agency reports that the Twitter and Facebook accounts affiliated with the Sunni militant group known as the Islamic States of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), congratulated Argentinian soccer player Lionel Messi for the goal he scored in closing minutes of the Iran-Argentina World Cup soccer match on June 21st. The group also invited him to “join the jihadist call.”
