Barack and Michelle Obama’s weekend visit to Palm Springs, California, started out with a wardrobe malfunction for the first lady – but luckily the president was there to save the day.

The first couple were stepping off Air Force One at the Palm Springs International Airport on a balmy Friday evening when a gust of wind nearly blew up the voluminous skirt of Mrs Obama’s green-and-black summer frock.

The 50-year-old first lady was photographed struggling to tame the billowing fabric as a relaxed Mr Obama walked alongside her with a rueful smile on his wife.
