A dozen counties in California are ignoring immigration laws and are now refusing to hold illegal aliens who have been convicted of other crimes past their jail sentences, even if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests them to be held. The counties of Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Berandino are among 100 municipalities across the country who are refusing to comply with so-called ICE detainers, which request local law enforcement to hold illegal aliens who are eligible for deportation longer than their jail terms.

The stated reason for the policy shift by these local governments is one of liability, after an Oregon county was found liable for damages by a Federal judge after holding an illegal alien past their jail term at the request of ICE. However last year, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that makes California a de facto sanctuary state for illegal aliens.
