An American who killed himself in a suicide attack in Syria was from South Florida, a U.S. official said.
Authorities are exploring whether the young man, whose name has not been disclosed, traveled to Syria more than once, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the investigation.
The man, known as Abu Huraira al-Amriki, helped carried out a bombing involving a large truck Sunday in the northern province of Idlib. A video that surfaced depicted the operation and linked the American to the attack.
It is believed to be the first time an American has participated in a suicide attack in Syria. However, other Americans have died fighting in the three-year-old Syrian conflict.
