The State Department said Friday that Secretary of State John Kerry will not comply with a congressional subpoena requiring him to testify on Benghazi in the House next week.
State sent a letter to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Friday saying Kerry has agreed to testify about Benghazi, but only in June. The letter proposes June 12 or June 20 as possible dates.
Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) last week issued a subpoena for Kerry’s testimony on May 29. But Deputy State Department Spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters that while Kerry will be in Washington on May 29, he has “a lot on his plate” that day.
“He has a whole world of pressing diplomatic issues on his plate,” she explained further, adding that the letter asks Issa to drop his subpoena for May 29.
