A 15-year-old boy was killed and at least five other people were shot in separate incidents on the West and South sides Sunday afternoon and evening, authorities said.
Including those attacked Sunday, at least four people have been shot to death and another 18 people injured in shootings in Chicago since Friday afternoon, with another man shot to death by police in the Austin neighborhood.
In the fatal attack of the 15-year-old, in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, the boy was shot in the chest and under the arm about 3:40 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 116th Street, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Stacey Cooper.
The boy, 15, was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was identified as Vaughn Holeman, of the 400 block of West 115th Street, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The boy was injured in what may have been a drive-by shooting, Cooper said, citing preliminary information.
The boy was on the street when a vehicle drove past and someone opened fire, striking him, according to police. Witnesses on the street thought the boy might have been struck by someone firing from the passing vehicle, which drove east on 115th Street after the shooting. But officers took into custody an older boy who was with the 15-year-old and who may have tried to shoot someone in the vehicle, instead hitting the younger boy.
Police confirmed this morning that detectives are interviewing a person of interest in the shooting.
Gang members in the area are involved in an internal conflict, according to police. So far in 2014, at least 19 people have been shot in the West Pullman neighborhood, according to a Tribune analysis.
