What exactly are they celebrating?
Via Politico:
President Barack Obama celebrated the completion of the first open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act with a star-studded reception at the White House on Thursday.
“Nashville” actress Connie Britton, former “Blossom” star Mayim Bialik and Bill Nye the Science Guy were among those on hand, as were Vice President Joe Biden, departing Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and other Cabinet members.
A White House official confirmed the event, organized by the Office of Public Engagement, describing as a way to thank “stakeholders and administration officials who helped with the outreach and enrollment around the Affordable Care Act … for their efforts.”
First lady Michelle Obama also joined the president at the event, which was not included on the president’s public schedule, but included “loose and informal” remarks, as one attendee described them, from the first couple.
Without notes or a teleprompter, the president rehashed the enrollment numbers and thanked the crowd gathered in the Entrance and Cross Halls of the State Floor for its support in working on the law and getting people enrolled, the attendee said. Obama said that the first open enrollment period “represents a major step forward for this country and that the real impact is playing out in the lives of men, women, and children all across this country who now have access to health care – many for the first time,” the White House official said.
Obama also offered a shoutout to the people who worked on HealthCare.gov and other technical aspects, leading a “tech team! tech team!” chant.
