The federal portal for Obamacare shut down its 2014 open enrollment but re-emerged as planned Tuesday morning with options for people who had trouble meeting Monday’s midnight deadline.
The website’s home page stresses that the sign-up season is over, and it takes a bit of clicking through to the “see if you can still get coverage” section to learn the next steps. But then the door to ongoing sign-up is open for people who qualify for special enrollment. There’s an 800 number for more help and a green button that says “apply.”
Extra time will be available for people who encountered a range of problems as they tried to sign up, including getting inaccurate health plan information displayed on the website, having an insurer wrongly reject the application, getting shunted back and forth incorrectly between the exchange and Medicaid, unresolved complex family situations and the broadly worded “other system errors that kept you from enrolling.” The request will be reviewed, but HHS has previously said they will basically operate on an honor system.
