Healthcare.gov has been down for maintenance since early Monday morning, the final day for Americans to sign up for health insurance or face a fine.

The Obamacare website has been unable to handle enrollment requests since 3 a.m., a Department of Health and Human Services official confirmed.

The technical glitch comes at a brutal time for the White House, which is trying to initiate as many Obamacare sign ups as possible before the midnight deadline.

However, the administration already announced that it would essentially extend the deadline for people who claimed they had technical difficulties enrolling in an Obamacare plan.
