Bomb Alarm

BOLO for Wile E. Coyote

A bomb look-alike that was found at the off-campus apartment of a University of Maryland Eastern Shore student and prompted a 911 call for the bomb squad and numerous police agencies, turned out to be no more alarming than, well, an alarm clock.

The digital clock — wired to what appears to be a bundle of dynamite — was realistic enough to fool members of the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s bomb squad, said Princess Anne Police Chief Scott Keller. But after they X-rayed the device, they determined it was a fake.

Keller — who still didn’t know exactly what the device was — took it back to the police station and showed it to Capt. Tim Bozman.

“Timmy said, ‘that looks like an alarm clock’,” he said.

Bozman and some of the other officers soon began searching online and found a device made by nootropic design LLC, a small technology and design company based in Minneapolis.

The company’s website includes a warning to anyone purchasing their Defusable Alarm Clock:

“Dear Pranksters: Yeah, you. I know you are excited to scare your friends and coworkers with a phony bomb, but use your head. This kind of device can make people freak out and call the authorities. So don’t bring this to school or to work, and certainly don’t bring it anywhere near an airport! Seriously, don’t get yourself into trouble.”
