An Indonesian Catholic woman who is a migrant worker in Malaysia is fighting her conviction in a sharia court, the Malaysian Insider reported.

The woman, an illiterate massage therapist who was found guilty of being in close proximity with a member of the opposite sex, is believed to be the first Christian convicted by a sharia court in Malaysia.

“Halimah claimed that the department forced her to admit to the offence during interrogation and in court too,” her attorney said. “She was afraid and unrepresented. She did not know how to answer when she was asked about being a Christian. She was not even aware that she was in a sharia court.”
