A man shooting squirrels prompted a Lexington School District One school to be locked down for about three hours on Wednesday morning, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff’s department spokesperson Maj. John Allard said a school bus driver spotted the unidentified man toting a shotgun in a wooded area near Midway Elementary School.
Allard said the bus driver told a school administrator about the sighting.
In an abundance of caution, the sheriff’s department asked Lexington One to lock down the school around 9:30 a.m.
Deputies canvassed the school and the surrounding area to search for the man, who was eventually located several hours later.
Allard said the man was lawfully hunting squirrels with a shotgun on private property.
The man netted two squirrels for his efforts.
No students were injured.
The sheriff’s department continues to investigate.
