Former Vice President Al Gore made an appearance at a Democratic fundraising dinner Wednesday night at the home of Tom Steyer and referred to the California billionaire as “Mr. Tipping Point” in the fight against climate change, according to a source who attended.

Gore “discussed the need to not just win — but to win quickly enough to make a difference,” according to the source.

The roughly 70 guests who attended the two-hour dinner at Steyer’s abode in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood ate grass-fed beef from Steyer’s ranch, as well as salmon, while a large California flag hung on the wall. The event raised $400,000 for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Democratic Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Patrick Leahy of Vermont “focused on how exposed the Republicans are for adopting and promoting a basic anti-science position,” the source said.

Other Democratic lawmakers in attendance were Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Ben Cardin of Maryland and Mark Udall of Colorado, and Rep. Gary Peters of Michigan. Shaheen and especially Udall may face tight reelection races, while Peters is running for an open Senate seat to replace retiring Carl Levin that is also critical for Democratic chances of retaining control of the upper chamber.
