Several hundred well-wishers gathered at Mojo Grill in downtown Ocala Saturday night to celebrate the safe homecoming of Marine Lance Cpl. David Garrett Burgess, who was wounded in December while serving in Afghanistan.

“It’s no big deal. There are 200,000 other Marines,” said the 19-year-old Purple Heart recipient and 2012 Vanguard High School graduate, clearly overwhelmed by the applause, cheering and embraces from the overflow crowd.

Burgess, who goes by his middle name, Garrett, made the remark just after he arrived in a limousine escorted by the Ocala Police Department with lights flashing and sirens wailing accompanied by his wife, Emily, and their baby, Joseph.

Joseph Burgess was born Dec. 17 at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Md., where Emily stayed while her husband underwent several surgeries during a month-long stay following his injuries suffered Dec. 4 and medical evacuation from Afghanistan to Germany and then to the U.S.
