Brent Betterly(center), 25, Jared Chase(right), 29, and Brian Church(left), 22, were arrested in May 2012 at the NATO summit in Chicago, after assembling four Molotov cocktails using empty beer bottles, gasoline and an undercover Chicago police officer’s cut-up bandanna.
Chase and Betterly were both Occupiers connected to Occupy Fort Lauderdale. Both had prior arrests including Betterly for breaking into a high school and doing property damage and Chase, for theft. Both had also been arrested in Washington D.C. at the same Occupy event.
After a three week trial, and about 8 hours of deliberation, the jury today found them not guilty of terrorism charges, but guilty on two counts of mob action, as well as possession of an incendiery device and of arson.
Even without the terrorism charges, they face up to 30 years exposure during the sentencing phase of the trial.
