It’s the clash of the titans.
Mayor de Blasio on Tuesday vowed to press on with his signature proposal to hike taxes on the rich to pay for universal prekindergarten, even as Gov. Cuomo called for using existing state revenues instead.
The opposing positions set the stage for a showdown between the two powerhouse Democrats, longtime allies with dramatically different political agendas this year.
At a City Hall news conference, de Blasio repeatedly cited his 49-point blowout victory in the Nov. 5 mayoral election as a “mandate” for his plan to raise taxes on city residents earning $500,000 or more.
De Blasio called Cuomo’s plan, first reported in Tuesday’s Daily News, “commendable” and “encouraging” — but he insisted that only a tax hike dedicated to expanding pre-K would guarantee funding year after year.
“The jury is in,” de Blasio said. “The people believe in this idea. They want it and they want it to actually happen, which means the funding source has to be reliable.”
