Several people are likely dead after structural collapse and fire at an animal feed plant in Omaha, Neb., the head of the city’s fire department said Monday afternoon
Omaha Fire Department Chief Bernie Kanger said there were fatalities as a result of the accident — but he did not say how many.Kanger said crews have stopped rescue efforts and will start a slower recovery effort to retrieve victims. The International Nutrition plant is unstable, so rescuers must work deliberately to ensure their safety, he said.
Thirty-eight employees were inside the Industrial Nutrition plant at 10 a.m. on Monday when the accident occurred, officials said. Ten people were transported to local hospitals and seven refused care, leaving 21 workers unaccounted for
