(Politico) — Former President Bill Clinton is calling on the Obama administration not to “shut the door” on the possibility of arming rebels fighting against Muammar Qadhafi’s regime in Libya.
“I might need to know a little more, I would be inclined to do it,” he said in a taped interview that aired Monday morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
“I sure wouldn’t shut the door to it,” he said.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Congress late last week that the Obama administration has yet to make an official decision on whether to arm the Libyan opposition. Yet the former president hewed toward taking that step, while Clinton cautioning that he was speaking without any official sanction — “I’m just speaking for myself,” he said, an important caveat for the husband of the secretary of state.
