Former White House senior adviser David Axelrod and former chief of staff Bill Daley on Wednesday criticized stories from former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’s book slamming the president, especially those alleging he made Iraq decisions based on political reasons.

“I’m not suggesting that [Gates] made things up to sell a book, but I think the language that he used, for example, on that Iraq story, was vague and it was subjective,” Axelrod said on NBC’s “Today” on Wednesday.

“There was never a political discussion about this because [Obama’s] position on it was absolutely clear,” Axelrod said. “Even in the book, based on the quotes that were in the newspapers, Secretary Gates said he made some vague suggestion that perhaps that was his position. That was not his position.”
