One hundred million people battened down the hatches as winter storm Hercules slammed the Northeast with stiff winds and punishing cold temperatures on Friday, dumping nearly 2 feet of snow across the region.
New York City public schools were closed on Friday – a decision made by newly appointed schools chancellor Carmen Farina shortly before 5am. It means a snow day for 1.1 million students.
The National Weather Service said 21 inches of snow had fallen in Boxford, just north of Boston, on Thursday night, while other parts of the state had 17 or 18 inches.
Parts of upstate New York had received 18 inches while New York City was on course to get about 8 inches of snowfall.
