(CNN) – The top Democrat in the House predicted that any political fallout from the new healthcare law will be reversed within months.
“By the time we get into the spring, I think the Affordable Care Act will either be a wash or a plus for Democrats,” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters Monday on a conference call.
The California lawmaker’s comments came just as the Obama administration announced yet another rules change in the Obamacare signup process – extending by a day Monday’s enrollment deadline to ensure coverage by January 1.
If correct, Pelosi’s prediction would represent a turnaround from recent polling trends.
According to a new CNN/ORC poll on Monday, 35% of Americans surveyed said they favored the new health care law, with 62% opposed.
“We’ll ride this out,” she said, when asked if controversy over the health reforms championed by Obama will hurt Democrats in next November’s midterms. “This is a transformative initiative, like Medicare, Medicaid.”
Pelosi admitted that she and other Democrats have been disappointed with the rocky rollout of the program, but she insisted Obamacare would not determine the balance of power in Congress in 2014.
