No punishment is too severe.

Vandals defaced an Inwood memorial dedicated to 9/11 victims on Thanksgiving night, covering it in yellow spray paint.

The memorial, located at the Church of the Good Shepherd, at Broadway and Isham St., includes 25 memorial stones.

The heartless act left the community and the church outraged.

“It really is a sacred spot,” said the Rev. Robert Abbatiello, pastor of Church of the Good Shepherd. “It was a real slap in the face. I would love to sit down with the person and say ‘Why the church? Why the memorial garden?’ ”

Church officials discovered the graffiti Friday morning. Yellow spray paint lined the walls surrounding the memorial garden, which was dedicated in 2002. The stones, which bear the names of the victims, were untouched.

“The garden memorial is a symbolic monument to the brave souls who gave their lives helping to save others on that infamous day,” said City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Inwood). “Such senseless acts of vandalism have no place in Northern Manhattan. It is utterly unacceptable and entirely uncharacteristic of what this community stands for, and I expect the perpetrators to be found and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
