There are twelve million people who play World of Warcraft. If you follow me on Twitter, you probably know that I’m one of them. For those of you who don’t – World of Warcraft is an online RPG based on the Warcraft series of games by Blizzard.
For those of you who know what I’m talking about – I play a Holy Paladin on Tichondrius (come at me bro!) and for TWO YEARS my characters name has been “Obummercare”. Early this morning I signed into the game to see this:
It seems someone in the game reported my character name last night to Blizzard and upon reviewing, Blizzard decided that this character name was in violation of the Terms of Service. When I asked Blizzard specifically what the violation was they answered:
“The character in question violates our gaming policy of not allowing character names to insult real-world individuals or groups of people. You can review our policy at your leisure at https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/naming-policy“
So I headed over to the Blizzard TOS for naming conventions of in-game characters and found this:
Nowhere in this policy do I see what he mentioned.
And in case you’re wondering, yes there are far more specific and offensive names in WOW not just “IPeeFreely”
