Reader Dapandico noticed that Montana State Senator Christine Kaufmann is also working as an Obamacare navigator.

Dapandico contacted Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen to ask if this was kosher or not:

Dear
Johan Galt,

Thank you for contacting Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica J. Lindeen. You asked:

Q: Isn’t it a conflict of interest for State Senator Christine
Kaufmann to also act as a Navigator?

The Office of the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance was not and is
not involved in the hiring of navigators in Montana. By state law, we certify
and train all navigators, certified application counselors (CACs), and
certified insurance agents. We are not involved in hiring any of this
workforce.

Sen.Kaufmann is a navigator employed by the Montana Primary Care Association(MPCA).

I want to make sure I understand your question: Do you mean it is a conflict of
interest for a state senator to work as a navigator? Is there another reason
you believe Sen. Kaufmann’s employment raises conflict of interest concerns?

You may already know this, but Sen. Kaufmann previously worked in this office,
however her employment here ended in December of 2012, at least eight months
before she was hired as a navigator for MPCA.

I hope this information was helpful. Don’t hesitate to contact us with further
questions in the future.
