John Kerry says Iran has walked away from a deal over its nuclear programme, but Tehran negotiators say agreement reached for “co-operation roadmap”

John Kerry accused Iran of suffering a failure of nerve that scuppered a deal on its nuclear programme at the last minute.

While the US secretary of state reiterated his confidence that an agreement could be reached soon, he risked antagonising Tehran by blaming it for the lack of an accord after three days of talks in Geneva.

Questioned over widespread reports that it was France that had opposed the terms of an interim agreement, Mr Kerry said Western powers in the P5+1 group, representing the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, had in fact been united as talks neared their conclusion on Saturday.

“The French signed off on it, we signed off on it,” he said. “There was unity but Iran couldn’t take it.

“At that particular moment they weren’t able to accept. Our hope is that in the next months we can find an agreement that meets everyone’s standards.”
