Janis Shinwari was an interpreter for U.S. Forces who saved the lives of American soldiers in Afghanistan. Because of the danger that they face from the Taliban, interpreters there are promised visas by this country, if needed, to get out. But Janis had his visa first approved, then snatched away again after a report against him that likely came from the Taliban.
This is definitely a case where media attention finally helped get Janis to safety.
There are still many interpreters in danger there to whom we owe not only a debt of gratitude, but a fulfillment of the promise that we made.
