The New York Times editorial board on Saturday endorsed Democrat Bill de Blasio in the race to become the next mayor of New York City.

The Times praised Republican candidate Joe Lhota’s record of public service during former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s tenure, but accused him of resorting to a campaign based on fear.

The paper singled out de Blasio’s “remarkable” rise in the city’s primary elections, when he beat out New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former Rep. Anthony Weiner. The editorial, published online, said de Blasio won by “appealing directly and doggedly to struggling New Yorkers who see a city of lofty wealth rising out of their reach.”
