ALBANY — Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords will travel to upstate New York on Sunday to attend her first gun show since being shot in the head nearly three years ago.
Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, will attend the Saratoga Springs Arms Fair to praise organizers for agreeing to a background check “code of conduct” pushed by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
The code requires vendors at gun shows in New York to comply with a state law requiring all purchasers to submit to background checks.
Giffords and Kelly will use the visit to press their campaign for a federal law mandating background checks for all buyers at every gun show in the nation.
“The state’s model helps keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them — like criminals and the dangerously mentally ill — without infringing on our Second Amendment rights,” Kelly said in a statement.
Schneiderman said that the “code of conduct” his office developed has been signed by the 35 known gun show operators in New York, resulting in background checks for virtually every firearm sold at the shows.
