The bullet has been removed from the wall in the storeroom of Alondra’s Vanidades on Park Avenue, but signs of a violent struggle still abound: a bloody handprint smeared across a microwave, red droplets hardened onto the walls and floors, police evidence numbers on every piece of knocked over merchandise.

An attack at the store Saturday afternoon left Zoila Nova fighting for her life, struggling to breathe after a bullet pierced the upper left side of her chest, barely missing her heart and causing her lung to collapse, Carmen Salavarrieta, a city activist, said Wednesday night. Nova is expected to survive.

The 52-year-old Nova was working in the shop that sells everything from shampoo to winter coats around 1 p.m., when a customer asked to see a bottle of Brut cologne, according her son, Edward Duarte.
