Middlesex County prosecutors have obtained a warrant for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev so they can araign him on charges that he murdered an MIT police officer in Cambridge.

Tsarnaev, 20, of Cambridge was indicted by a county grand jury in June in the murder of Officer Sean Collier on April 18. He also faces a variety charges of other charges, including armed assault with intent to murder for allegedly attacking Watertown police officers in a shootout in the early morning hours of April 19, a few hours after Collier’s murder.

“It is the intention of the Middlesex District Attorney that the defendant stand trial for these charges in Middlesex County,” District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said in a statement.

Prosecutors won the default warrant at a hearing this morning in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.

They explained that it was a procedural step necessary to ensure that Tsarnaev eventually appears in state court to be arraigned. Tsarnaev will likely not appear there until the conclusion of his federal trial.
