Later this morning, Environmental Protection Agency administrator Gina McCarthy will present new draft rules for how much carbon dioxide power plants are to be allowed to spew into the atmosphere. The proposal is considered historic, especially by those who had to sift the 2.5 million or so public comments on the previous draft of these rules. In one respect, it is: This will mark the first time the U.S. has treated carbon dioxide— the leading greenhouse gas that is warming the earth’s atmosphere and imperiling life everywhere— as pollution, full stop. If you’re pumping more than your legal limit of CO2 into the sky, well then, you sir, are a criminal.

(Politico) — Former Vice President Al Gore said EPA’s regulations for future power plants are a major step toward putting the United States “on the path toward solving the climate crisis.”

“Today’s announcement by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy is an important step forward for our nation and our planet. From now on, future coal- and gas-fired power plants must take responsibility for their global warming pollution by reducing or capturing their overall emissions,” Gore, a vocal advocate for action on climate change, wrote on his blog Friday.

But he stressed that Congress still needs to take action, and he called for lawmakers to levy a price on carbon.

“The policies announced today, combined with the rest of the President’s Climate Action Plan, will put us on the path toward solving the climate crisis, but Congress must also soon face the reality of the situation,” he said, referring to the broad plan the president announced in June that includes several actions aimed at cutting the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
