Via BBC:
One of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings was in possession of right-wing American literature in the run-up to the attack, BBC Panorama has learnt.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev subscribed to publications espousing white supremacy and government conspiracy theories.
He also had reading material on mass killings.
Until now the Tsarnaev brothers were widely perceived as just self-styled radical jihadists.
Panorama has spent months speaking exclusively with friends of the bombers to try to understand the roots of their radicalisation.
So what is the problem with their “months of research”, besides a concerted effort to jump through hoops to proclaim Tamerlan “not really a Muslim”?
Their problem is that in trying so hard to declare him “not a muslim” , they reveal their prejudices about what is “right-wing”, their lack of understanding of history and their failure to understand what radical Muslims might actually be reading or thinking.
Why do they conclude he was right-wing?
1. Reading material he had about white supremacy commented that “Hitler had a point”.
Hitler had a great relationship with radical Muslims; they shared the common desire to get rid of Jews. When some Nazis fled, in addition to South America, one of their most frequent escapes was to Arab or Muslim enclaves.
Of course, it is uneducated myth that Hitler was “right-wing”, he was actually a Socialist (as in National Socialist or Nazi Party). Hardly “right-wing”.
Notice how broad their characterizations are, and that they never actually name the literature.
2. They cite that he was interested in government conspiracy theories, such as 9/11 and the Oklahoma bombing were government conspiracies.
Actually most right-wing folks don’t believe these are conspiracies so, factually, the BBC is just wrong.
Moreover, it is a common thread amongst some radical Muslims to encourage “trutherism”. Clearly, Tamerlan was right in line with this thinking.
3. Mass killings
We’ll leave aside the prejudice that exists in implying that, somehow, reading about mass killings is right-wing. But obviously if he was planning on killing a lot of people, this type of material might be right up his alley.
4. Reading about prisoners held in Guantanamo
Well, duh? Muslims held in captivity wrongly, in his opinion.
5. Something about “rape of our gun rights”
This is about the only thing that could even pass for “right-wing”. Of course, a Muslim wanting to be able to kill a lot of people would care as well.
BBC, try to learn a little history and culture before you hang your prejudices out in the wind…
