Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel warned earlier this week that the Pentagon may be forced to cut the Army to its lowest point in over a decade if the sequester remains in place.

In his starkest terms to date, Hagel laid out a worst-case scenario for the U.S. military if the Pentagon is forced to slash more than $50 billion from the 2014 budget and $500 billion over the next 10 years as a result of Congressionally-mandated automatic spending cuts.

Speaking to Pentagon reporters, and indirectly to Congress, he laid out options that included shrinking the Army from 490,000 under current targets to a force as small as 380,000 — far below even its modern low point at the end of the Clinton administration.
