Convicted killer Billy Slagle hung himself in his Death Row prison cell early this morning – three days before he was to be executed.
Slagle, 44, was found hanging in his cell at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution about 5 a.m. today and was declared dead at 6:11 a..m., according to JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. No other details were released.
“We will be conducting a complete investigation,” she said.
Slagle, of Cleveland, was scheduled to be executed at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville for the 1987 murder of Mari Anne Pope, 40, a neighbor. Slagle stabbed Pope 17 times with scissors. Two children she was babysitting were in the house at the time.
