Emily’s List, the nation’s most influential pro-choice political action committee and key Obama backer, is pushing Hillary Clinton and several other women, notably outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Wendy Davis, who fought to preserve abortion in Texas, as top 2016 Democratic presidential candidates.
The group, which recently unveiled a new campaign to put a woman in the White House in the next election, this week produced a “women we’re watching” list that also includes five female senators, including Missouri’s Claire McCaskill, Obamacare czar Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, the first openly bisexual person elected to the Congress.
Davis made headlines when she filibustered a ban on late term abortion. The law, however, was finally approved last week.
“We are ready,” said Emily’s List President Stephanie Schriock in a post election review, “to put a Democratic woman in the Oval Office, and that starts with putting a woman on the Democratic ticket in 2016.”
