A Queensland man will undergo a mental health assessment after allegedly driving his car into the gates of the United States embassy in Canberra.
Adrian Richardson, 30, appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with damaging the premises of an internationally protected person.
The court heard security staff saw Richardson driving slowly around the high-security embassy, in the suburb of Yarralumla, about 6:00pm on Wednesday.
It is alleged he then turned off his lights, drove to within 20 metres of the main gate, revved his engine then rammed into it.
He was immediately detained by security and taken into custody but the incident sparked a large-scale emergency response from police and the bomb squad.
The damage bill is estimated to be up to $100,000.
Prosecutors told the court that Richardson had been staying at an adult mental health facility and had released himself just hours before the incident.
Richardson remains in custody and has been ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.
The US embassy has released a statement on its Facebook page thanking Australian authorities for their response to the incident.
The embassy says it appreciates the timely and professional support provided by federal and local law enforcement and emergency services.
“Thanks to everyone who sent us messages about the incident at the embassy last night. We’re relieved no one was injured and we’re grateful for your concern,” the statement reads.
