(The Hill) — A veteran Democratic lawmaker criticized the Obama administration on Tuesday for its firing of the State Department’s top spokesman over the weekend.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) called the firing of P.J. Crowley, the former spokesman, “outrageous,” and called on President Obama to “fix” the situation.

Crowley submitted his resignation over the weekend after comments of his criticizing the administration’s handling of the suspect in the WikiLeaks case became public.

Crowley echoed what some liberal activists and lawmakers have said publicly about the government’s treatment of Bradley Manning, the Army private suspected of leaking classified government documents to the website WikiLeaks, which released them to the public.

“What is being done to Bradley Manning is ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid on the part of the department of Defense,” Crowley said of the government’s treatment of Manning last week during a public forum at MIT.
