President Barack Obama on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s rulings on same-sex marriage, but said the high court “made a mistake” in its decision to overturn a key piece of the Voting Rights Act.

Speaking from Dakar, Senegal, in his first remarks since those decisions were handed down earlier this week, Obama said he would push forward to respond to the implications of both issues. […]

But with its ruling on the VRA, the Supreme Court “made a mistake,” Obama said. The high court “didn’t recognize the degree to which voter suppression is still a problem around the country, and that it makes sense for us to put in place mechanisms to check practices and procedures that may make it difficult for people to vote in those areas where there’s been a history in the past of discrimination.”
