Seven little Occupiers sitting in a tree, taken to the ground ungraciously. First comes handcuffs, then comes jail, then comes continuing a whole lot of fail.
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco police are guarding the former site of the Hayes Valley Farm located at Fell Street and Octavia Boulevard after law enforcement officials removed protesters who were occupying the area early Thursday morning.
The patch of land is scheduled to be developed into new housing.
There was a large police presence in the area all day after authorities sent out notices this past week, warning protesters they were trespassing on city property and would be arrested.
That raid came at 1:30 a.m. and almost all of the 44 people left peacefully. Three activists living on platforms in trees did not. They and four others were arrested.
One-by-one police and city workers on cherry pickers, took them out.
Police said one protester fell onto a mattress officers had placed under the tree. He claimed he was pushed.
“If a person might have fallen out of a tree, it was totally an accident and not the fault of anyone,” said Sgt. Dennis Toomer of the San Francisco Police Department.
Another protester claims police gave him a black eye.
“They started grabbing me and striking me and tried to manhandle me. That failed,” he said.
Police also denied that claim.
The developers of the planned luxury condominiums can now proceed with their plans however, they could face another big problem. The trees may be home to nests of migratory humming birds protected by the federal government.
“And I’ve identified five trees where that they’re absolutely living and I believe that there’s more. I think there’s probably more than a 100 birds in the park,” said environmental activist Eric Eberman.
Police say they will be there as long as it takes to make sure the protesters do not return.
The Occupiers broke into the site on June 7th, locking out the workers who had been sent to cut down the trees, saying they were there to “liberate the land”. They dubbed the space “Gezi Gardens” after the park in Istanbul that had sparked the protests. Police gave them several warnings to leave before finally moving in to remove them.
