President Obama Wednesday made a contribution to the Democrats’ campaign to paint Republicans as extremists, declaring Abraham Lincoln to be his favorite president.
“Look, I don’t believe that any single party has a monopoly on wisdom,” Obama said. “My favorite President is a guy from Illinois who founded the Republican Party, effectively — Abraham Lincoln, our first Republican President.” […]
Obama went on to infer that Republicans were discriminatory and hostile to the principles of equality that Lincoln has come to represent.
“What does make me a Democrat is the basic idea that in this country, no matter what you look like, no matter where you come from, no matter who you love, you should be able to get ahead if you’re willing to work hard and act responsibly,” Obama said.
