Reports are that the Kabul International Airport is under attack.

Explosions were heard by Reuters witnesses and there were reports of gunfire near Afghanistan’s main international airport in the capital, Kabul, early on Monday, and a police spokesman said insurgents had launched an attack.

The attack on the airport – which is also home to a large NATO-led military base – began shortly before 5 a.m. (0030 GMT), Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said. Explosions could still be heard several minutes after the attack began.

Report is attack is on U.S. Air Force area at airport, reported suicide bombers in that area.

The Counter Narcotic building which is located to the north of the airport also under attack. Militants are reported shooting from a high building into the airport.

Explosions are continuing to go off at the airport. Helicopters overhead assessing the situation. Police car nearly hit by rocket, according to reporter nearby on the ground.

There has been a stand-off, with assailants holed up in a building on the airport. They are now being attacked by Afghan and International forces.

Report that an ambulance was used in bombing at the airport. U.S. Air Force tents reportedly damaged. (update from police says not ambulance but another vehicle, that police destroyed)

Fight is now over, at least three dead attackers reported at this time. Initial reports suggest no casualties on U.S., International, Afghan side but this is early report.

Final count was seven attackers killed-two with suicide vests, five by police/military response.

No other casualties, some damage to a tent-like hangar structure.
